- In all probablility one of the MC14xx chips is blown. These are the voltage
- translators from the ttl logic levels to the +-12 volts (or more) used by
- RS-232. They're soldered in and cheap at the shack. Can you solder? If not,
- find a friend who can and who has the tools. If he paid less than $100 US
- for the iron, skip to the next friend or tv shop. Using fine nippers, cut
- the legs on both chips at the chip body and toss them. Now you can remove
- each pin much easier. Put some sockets in the board and put new chips in.
- Total hardware costs at the radio shack store are less than $10 US, I don't
- know what labor will be where you are. You'll need a MC1488 and an MC1489
- plus 2 ea 14 pin "dip" sockets.
